Geekery

So yesterday's picture is late, but here it is:

Some of the guys at the weekly meeting for the campus gaming club. It's geeky, and fun, and a nice break from school-related activities. My friends and I usually play Magic (this IS Geek Girl & Camera, you know), but other games include anything from Scrabble and Bananagrams to Killer Bunnies and a Battlestar Galactica board game. All in all, it's a pretty fun time :)

Happy Hippos

I found these little soapstone hippos at a fair trade shop in North Carolina while I was visiting an Aunt over spring break during my senior year of high school. My sister, B, had bought one the previous year, and I had been hoping to find them again. Happily, I did.

The original plan had just been to get one (I think I picked the yellow guy out first), but then I realized that one just wasn't enough. I love that because they're hand carved, they've each got their own unique look to them :) They've kept me company in the dorms these last two years, and given me something to play with when I inevitably get writer's block in the middle of a paper. For more inspiration, I keep XKCD: vol 0 (Randall Munroe), and my complete Shakespeare works- a handy graduation gift from another of my aunts :)

Heads up: these are great snacks

While I was babysitting W this weekend, we had snack time. Some dried fruit (strawberries ftw!), fresh blueberries, and a pack of these chocolate covered pretzel o's. The chocolate pretzels were great! I advise that everyone go out right now and buy a box:

As an added bonus, because they're ring shaped, you can eat them off of your fingertip for extra fun- a nice little trick I learned from W :)

Campus construction

This is why I'm glad my room is on the quad side of the building as opposed to the street side. I don't hear the construction when they start early in the morning, even when my window is open. This is especially wonderful since the window is open almost all the time now (except in the rain).

Weekend update

Found my camera cord! I left it on my desk. So here's what happened this weekend:

Saturday
I babysat my little cousin, who loves to walk around in big people shoes. He really seemed to like my black and white checked chucks. We probably spent a good 20 minutes walking around with them. Here's the little shoe thief just as he was putting my shoes on:

Sunday
Sunday I spend the morning/early afternoon at home before coming back up to school. I didn't notice when I got home Saturday night, but when I woke up Sunday morning, I saw this little guy sitting on my nightstand:

Now he's sitting on my dresser keeping an eye on my stuff while I'm at school. lol

tired...

Wicked tired tonight after watching W today and closet shopping in my aunt's closet. I took a ton of pictures, some of which will be uploaded tomorrow since I'm pretty sure I left my camera cable thing at school. Until then :)

Going home

This weekend is going to be really fun: tonight I'm staying at my Aunt and Uncle's house, and tomorrow I'm babysitting my adorable little cousin W. After babysitting, I'm going home for the night to hang out with my family. Sunday I'll come back to O to finish up the weekend hanging with my friends.

Today's picture (because I was busy and lazy today) features my backpack (computer and camera stuff, clothes for the weekend), and duffle bags (3 weeks of not doing laundry- again, I was lazy).

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day, everyone! Hope you're all having a lovely green day :)

Today's picture is my poptab bracelet, which my friend Molly made for me. I thought it was appropriate, since they've been recycled into some fun jewelry.

If you're interested in finding out how to make poptab things, here's a great tutorial I found over at WikiHow. If you're feeling more adventurous, Craftster has a page of 40 Eco-friendly projects for Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary, and Etsy has an older article featuring 10 Eco-Friendly Tutorials.

Aaaand, we're back on track!

Hooray for updating on time! Now on to today's pictures!

This is Jon, pretending to study. jk, he actually was doing homework when I took this. I think that's probably the only reason I was able to get a picture of him. Maybe it was sneaky, but I I'm ok with that since he ok-ed it later. What a good influence, right? I think so- I got a 40/50 on my exam this morning :) So to celebrate, I took another picture for today! I can see this pink tree from the window in Ben and Jon's room, which is cool because their room is a mess so it gives me something to look at. lol

(Seriously, I've spent a ridiculous amount of time staring at this tree)

Anyway, it's back to the library tomorrow so we can wrap up the Bosnia project. Wish us luck in case we have to present tomorrow!

Late post, sorry!

First off, I'd like to apologize that this picture is late. I did really take it yesterday, I just didn't get it posted until this morning. Our meeting ended up going later than I thought it would, and after that my brain had pretty much turned into mush.

Anyway, if you'll remember back to a couple of days ago, I had mentioned that I had never been in the public library before. I have, however, been known to frequent the campus library where this picture was taken. These lovely ladies and I have been assigned to give a presentation on the genocide in Bosnia for one of our classes, so we met up in one of the private study rooms to work on our stuff last night. We'll be there again tonight (although I'll try and find/post today's picture before then so I'm not late again). Wish us luck on our presentation? We're likely going to need a lot of it- our professor is Bosnian.

Library

This is the public library in O.

I have never been here before, but I liked the lions and the building overall, so hopefully you'll enjoy today's picture. For the curious, here's a closer look at the lions:

Hope you've all made it through Monday!

Strange model solar system

Way on the edge of campus, there's a building where all of the art people live. It's the Arts & Communication building, and the basement is kind of like a dungeon. Ben spends gajillions of hours on end there, because he's taking a printing class and everything pretty much has to be done in the building.
Anyway, this afternoon my boyfriend/ Ben's roommate Jon and I decided we would take a field trip and do some of our work in the dungeon with Ben. The printing room didn't have much free table space, so we ended up in the 3D room, where we found this:

I feel like we'll have to study there more often, if only so I can explore the different projects they have displayed. It was pretty cool, and sort of made up for being in a dungeon.

Wanna bet?

This afternoon, I really wanted pickles, so I decided I would go to the little store on campus to get some. My good friend Ben found this confusing, since he knew they didn't sell pickles there. I, however, knew that they did. So we made a bet: if there were pickles, he had to buy them for me, and if there were none, I had to buy him his next thing of diet Mountain Dew.

Victory!

Mystery Campus House

Today's picture features my neighbor, the Alumni House (or, as I call it, the creepy mystery house). I really have no idea what purpose this house serves our campus. I have never seen anyone in the house, or any lights, or heard of any events there. Nobody I've asked has seen anything to indicate that the place is used for anything.

I hardly even notice it anymore. I find the weird, curvy tree much more interesting. I feel like it would be a good spot for a low-level tree house. Except that probably you can't make a tree house on campus :/

Spring?

The weather was beautiful today! Sunny and very warm- I was out in shorts and a tee shirt all day. It's finally starting to feel like spring might actually be here to stay :)

This is what I see when I look out from my desk (at school, anyway). Is is ridiculously exciting to me. Just last week there was snow on the ground and now it's all gone and the grass is starting to come back in. When the weather is nice, you can usually see people studying or playing Frisbee or catch. Sadly, today it's too windy to be studying outside, so I get to sit here and draft my paper at the desk.

At least I have some nice pictures, courtesy of my younger sister B, to brighten up the dull dorm walls :)

Test

Just working out how to post/format pics. Please enjoy these dinosaurs until I get today's picture up :)

Intro/Explanation

I am a somewhat geeky college student, whose interests include reading, napping, Lady Gaga, and hanging out with my friends.

This blog is (hopefully) going to help me stay on track with a new resolution I've made: to take at least one picture every day for the rest of the year.

Why? Because my camera is fat and lazy and needs exercise, and unless I'm on vacation I generally tend to forget I have it.

Daily pictures will begin tomorrow, or as soon as I figure out how to post pictures.
